Hi Adam, tried the exefix.reg change to my registry and cannot run any apps at all. Not even a browser. I get this message: “This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel.” What should I do? Can I revert back to original settings w/o reactivating XP AntiSpyware 2010 again? Please help. Thanks.
Responding to the above comments. Basically, you deleted the thing that makes the computer recognize the exe extension. This is bad, because that extension is used to run most applications. So, to fix this, open a folder. Select Tools from the menu at the top, then click Folder Options. Select the third tab, file types. Click the New button. Type exe in the box, and click the advanced button. A drop down menu should appear. Find the one that says Application and select it. Then click OK. A window will pop up that basically says you’re replacing the exe application extension with an application extension, which you want to do. Click OK again. Should fix the problem.
Thanks Eric and Andrew, this realy works. Spyware Doctor removed this crap from my PC, but it is not totally free
Dito – Thanks Eric and Andrew – worked well. Found the av.exe in other spots of the registry as well.
fine! w/o notepad i could not do that, now i have got spyware doctor and removed XP Antispyware 2010
Wow, you did a great job explaining it. EXCEPT you forgot to mention that this disassociates the exe extension file. If it was not for the poster that told of the fix, many people would be screwed by your misguided advice. That was a very important step and one that you really should think about putting in there next time.
Or copy and paste this in notepad, save as xp-exe-fix.reg.
